Madhya Pradesh was created in 1950 from the former British
Central Provinces and Berar and the
princely states of
Makrai and Chhattisgarh. The new states of
Madhya Bharat and
Vindhya Pradesh were formed out of the Central India Agency. In 1956, the states
of Madhya Bharat, Vindhya Pradesh and Bhopal were merged into Madhya Pradesh,
and the Marathi-speaking southern region
Vidarbha. Bhopal became the new capital of the state.

History
The history of Madhya Pardesh goes back to the Mauryan Empire Ashoka, who ruled over in Malwa. The Sungas followed Mauryans and then Gupta. Then Hun swept across the state. Around 1000 years ago the parmars
ruled in s-w Pardesh. Bhopal is name given by Raja Bhoj. He also ruled over
Indore and Mandu from 950to 1050 A.D. The Chandelas constructed the
famous temples in Khajuraho.
Between the 12th
and 16th centuries, the region saw continuing struggle between Hindu and Muslim
rulers or invaders. Till the death of Mahadji Scindia in 1794, Marathas ruled supreme in Central India, but after this, independent smaller states came into existence.
Many women also ruled this region eg Rani Durgawati Rani Ahilyabai Holkar and Rani Kamla devi.
